replacing work station
04/04/12 at 09:01:48

I would like to replace a DBA workstation.   Right now all our (8)  workstations are XP or 98.
How much trouble is it to switch to VISTAS or Seven?
Would a VISTA or Seven station be compatible with my old Server?
              Microsoft Windows 2000
             5.00.2195
             Service Pack 4
              X86 Family 6 model 7 Stepping 3
              AT/AT Compatible
              261.676 KB

(side note) One day I know I am going to have to change my old server.  But I love it.  It has run flawless for years.

Thanks
Laura

Don't upgrade to Vista. It is a dead operating system.
Move all workstations to Windows 7. Evo works fine.

Yes, Windows 7 is compatible with your Windows 2000 Server

Windows 7 Home:            Can not join a DOMAIN
Windows 7 Professional:     It can join a DOMAIN
Windows 7 Premium:          Just a fancy name

So if you have a Domain Controller you should purchase Professional

There are other issues to consider.  Windows 7 isn't supported on the old Pervasive but Pervasive 11 (current edition) can't be loaded to Win 2000 server.  I know some people have been able to load Pervasive 2000 on Windows 7 but others have had problems and if there are problems, you are pout of luck because it is not a supported version anymore.

Actually you can use pervasive 11 client to connect to pervasive 2000
But it is not supported by Pervasive

So Lynn and Kellog,
Do you think it would be better to go with VISTA pro?    I really dont want to upgrade pervasives....yet ...

I could just stick with XP Pro

Kelloggs,  I will buy a new computer.

If you're just talking about the workstation, the 2000i client works fine on Win7, so long as you right click and install as admin.

If you can get the 2000i client to load on the Win 7 machine, go ahead but I recommend don't EVER mix different versions of Pervasive on the same network.  We have found MAJOR issues in cases where a 2000i server had a combination of 2000i and PSQL 8 clients.
