I've added a customer cross reference in IN-L-C, and set the default in SD-Q to 1. When I type the code in SO-A I get nothing. I can do a lookup, change to Customer X-Ref and see it there.
 
Maybe it doesn't work like the help implies? I am literally typing in the number directly into the Item Number field of the line.
