Spare Server
10/21/13 at 12:18:09

Hi.  I was wondering how other people deal with hardware issues when it relates to the server.  Currently, our server is in "the shop" because the hard disk is possibly going bad....again.   Anyway, when stuff like this happens we are basically dead in the water, no server means no EVO, no Sales orders, work orders, etc.  Dealing with this for a couple hours or even a day is bad enough, but sometimes, like when we have to get the hard disk replaced it can be 2-3 days before we get it back. Sad

How to others deal with that?  Is it possible to set up a different PC to be a "back up" server that I can dump the current files onto and keep people running or would that require a separate licensing?  Any advice is greatly appreciated!!  Just trying to come up with a way to minimize the down time.   Thanks!! undecided

I operate low budget so my way may not be suitable for you.

I always try to have a spare computer ready for emergency.

they are cheap enough that its not that big of a deal.

get a used server from www.evertek.com

I'm using an HP DL380 rack server right now  I think it cost about $ 350 bucks.

I filled it with good 72 gig drives and now have more capacity than ever.
bought a 2nd one for a spare.

It has raid 5 with 1 hot spare so a hard disk issue shouldn't be an issue.
I also run mozy pro every night as well as an offsite to a home computer.
Hardware raid 5 or 6 is a good way to protect against HD issues

So do you have Pervasive installed on the backup too?  Or do you install it at the time of emergency?

We do essentially the same thing (RAID 5 with spare hot-swaps, and daily local and off-site backups), and do major maintenance on the weekends. We do have a second server connected and operating (we use it for non-essential tasks and local backups) that we could run Evo off if we had to, but it would take a few hours to get everything installed and up to date.

Daily local and off-site backups is the key.  DO NOT be lulled into a false sense of security that RAID is a backup.  It is redundancy but not backup.

Pervasive 11 has made it difficult to have a backup server without either paying for the second Pervasive license or gambling that if there is a failure requiring resorting to the backup, you will have the resources to disable the license on the failed server so it can be activated on the new server.  Resources meaning either that you can disable the license on the old server and enable it on the new or, if it is a total meltdown, you can contact us (or whoever you purchased the PSQL 11 license from) and reset the license.  I believe (as a result of customer feedback) a  disabled license can be used for some period of time (7 days, 30 days, I am not sure) before resetting to allow you to resume operations immediately and have a time frame to get the licensing resolved.

Hmmm... "good" to know. Better now than later I guess.

This information should be part of a disaster FAQ.  Good to know these things.  Thanks.
