IN-B cant change item to status D
10/25/13 at 12:39:16

I used to be able to set items and boms to status D

now it says I can't because its on a BOM

I cant be disassembling my boms just because its discontinued.

Why not?

In the real world you can't make something without something that's required. Say you're a mint that makes gold coins. If you discontinue gold how are you going to make coins?

Procedurally, you really should first replace the items that are on BOM with whatever the new thing is (or delete it if it's no longer necessary), and then make the item Discontinued.

If the item is on a lot of BOMs you could use Global Replace. Not sure you can replace with "nothing" though. I guess you could make a nonsense place-holder like "DISCONTINUED" and replace the actual discontinued part with it...

because some times I need to look up and old bom to see what we used so I can sell a replacement item.

Items may have been discontinued that doesn't mean i dont need to ever cross them to a new item.

I just ran into this again today.  I need to discontinue a bom but I dont want to get rid of what we did.

I used to be able to set type D

I was using it that way

now I cant

its messing up the work flow

I need it fixed

today would be good

If you want to see what you MADE, just look at the WO BOM.

If you want to make it again, you will have to make the item Active and add it back to the BOM.

Maybe they will offer the option to allow Discontinued Items in a BOM if enough people need it, but it seems scary to me.

I just want it to work right.

you know the way it worked before.

I have items and boms that I have marked D

that are on other boms

so it must have worked that way

I dont see and issue if you go to use it it reminds you you cant
at that point I can do what ever I need to do to move on.

new item
charge more for a discontinued part
some customers want things the same no mater what  so I have to sometimes make a discontinued item. its the nature of custom machines.

I guess I didn't know it worked that way before. If you really need it to, maybe you could use an older version of IN-B? Worst case (and I'm not recommending this, just telling you it could be done...), use Maintain Datatbase to change status.

Not knowing what your purpose/intent is of making something Discontinued, one other possible option would be to make the status Engineering. It will still allow you to buy/make/sell but warns you that there may be an issue if you try doing something with the component. If you do consider that option I would suggest trying it extensively to make sure everything behaves the way you expect it to.

Mostly its for my F and O boms

I make a new one mark the old one D and then move it to the end of the list.

I now have a line item called discontinued.

I put that on my SO entry menu and put the discontinued boms below that. works but id still like to make it a type D

same with items. sometimes in the heat of the moment I just want to tag and item D so I will remember not to use it later.  when it comes up in the future I can fix the bom or whatever I have to do to replace that item.

since D lets you use up existing supply why would I take it off a bom when I still have some.
Seems to defeat the reasoning behind using the stuff up since once its off the bom I cant use it up.

I can confirm you used to be able to, because I just went into an item that was already Discontinued, tried to just change the price and save it. Got the message - can't Discontinue, it's on a BOM.

Your supposed to be able to use up an existing supply.

not sure how that happens if its off the bom.

We are having the same problem.  We want to change the bin location for a few items that have been active status D for a long time, but we cannot change the bin locations now because the item is on a BOM.  Went to save the new bin location and got the message - can't Discontinue, it's on a BOM.

It's not a fix, but personally I would just use Maintain Database unless it's a frequent need. Also, as pointed out, you won't be able to change and save anything else using IN-B once its status is Discontinued (and it's on a BOM).

I just want it to work they way it worked before.

I don't think making it do what it says it will do in the manual and what it used to do is too much to ask.

You were supposed to able to use up existing stock

now I cant
