workstation (win7 or 8 ?) (32 or 64 ?) pervasive?
06/03/14 at 06:50:47

I need to replace two  XP work stations.  Last year I replaced some 98 workstations with refurbished  win7 pro and they have worked great.  I can still buy refurbished win 7 pro machines, but I am wondering if I should make the jump to win 8?

But as always I need to make sure if win 8 is compatabile with my server and pervasive version.

Windows Server 2008 R2  Standard
Service Pack 1
Dell T310
Intel Xeon RCPU
X3450 @2677 GHz
266GP
64 bit

My Pervasive was installed in Aug of 2012, but I am not sure which version.   I know that my win7 pro machines work with it but I am not sure about win 8 machines.

Any and all ideas appreciated.
Laura

Windows 8 is another Windows Vista.
It is bad for you, and it will be replace soon.

What we are doing is to buy Windows 8 and downgrade it to Windows 7.
But there is a catch. You can not do it on the OEM (Retail) you need to purchase Volume License.

It cost more money but, if the computer fails you can install your copy of windows on another computer.

Windows 7 is by far a better operating system than Windows 8

 Cool

Thanks, I don't hear much good about it.  My laptop is win 8 and I manage.    I think I will go ahead and order a couple more of refurbished win 7 pro stations.

UGH!  .....  I just realized that my other win 7 pro workstations are 32 bit. But I had already ordered one that was a win7 pro  64 bit.

Can I use  win 7 pro  64 bit as a workstation?
Thanks

Yes!!!

Make sure to install the 32 Version of Pervasive.
If you have MS Office and you are planning to have it talk to DBA. You need to install MS Office 32 bit Version.

To setup your ODBC connections use: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe

I like win 8

I don't run Evo or DBA on it, but as far as an OS goes it has a lot of nice features related to how it uses the hard drives.

it seems faster than 7.  I dont expect it will be going away any time soon.

I had been using Win8 for a couple years and didn't want to upgrade to Win10 because Pervasive is not supported on it (IIRC). I had a lot of trouble getting Evo to run on it, but it eventually did. It seemed to run "ok", but I had a lot of freezing issues on the machine, not all in Evo necessarily, but especially in Crystal accessing the Evo data through ODBC.

I got a new computer a month or so ago and got a Win7 with upgrade to 10 option. Got Evo running on 7 and did the upgrade. Everything works great on the 10 machine.

I would personally suggest 10/64. But as previously pointed out, you need to install the Pervasive 32-bit client. If you're hesitant about running a non-supported combination, go ahead and get the 7 downgrade with free upgrade to 10, install nothing but Pervasive and Evo on it and upgrade to 10* to see if it works. If not, go back to 7, which is still a great OS and will be supported for a reasonably long time.

*the Upgrade that comes with a Dell system is not really an "up"grade. It's a Do-Over; IOW you will kill the original installation and any existing programs will have to be installed. We had downloaded a "real" upgrade a while ago when it was offered as a free upgrade to 8/8.1 and it worked fine to do a regular upgrade and registered/activated properly.

As a side comment, with PSQL 12 the requirement to load the 32 bit client on a 64 bit workstation goes away.  You can use the 64 bit client on a 64 bit machine and DBA and Evo work fine.  PSQL 12 is supported on Windows 10 and PSQL 10 and 11 seem to work fine, although technically not supported by Pervasive for Windows 10.
