Blanket Orders and MRP

We are expanding our use of MRP, and need to determine how to handle our blanket orders.  We have 6 month blanket orders for items with manufacturing lead times of 6-8 weeks.  The way that Evo appears to work is that it will generate the requirement for a work order at the time of a release against the blanket. This doesn’t work for us as the interval from release date to delivery date is less than our manufacturing lead time.   It may also generate a requirement for a work order if we are nearing the termination date of the blanket order and there is an unreleased quantity, which it views as a requirement.    We have identified two options – the first would be to split up the blanket order into 6 equal month amounts and enter 6 line items on the SO with delivery dates at monthly intervals.  The second would be to populate the reorder level field and essentially create safety stock.  Is there another way to work with blanket orders within MRP that we haven’t thought of?

How you handle it would depend upon how you define blanket order.  Where I work, if we place a blanket order with a vendor, we don't have firm release dates, but expect that they will keep a reasonable stock on hand after the initial lead time.  It also means that at the end of the blanket period, we get the remaining items on the PO, whether we need them or not.
With a scheduled (release) order, we have separate lines for each release.  Depending upon how flexible the vendor is willing to be, we can move up or delay a shipment some.
If your customer can live with more or less fixed delivery dates, then I would suggest separate lines.
