Printing 7 inch checks with XP Pro
08/12/03 at 18:14:29

This may have been addressed before, but I couldn't find it. Just set up a workstation using XP Pro. Now I cannot print checks using the text/generic driver. Even though set for Cont-No page break, it form feeds. I also tried to use the actual Okidata driver and it does the same. Printer is only used for checks, so I tried setting the page length in the printer itself, but that doesn't help either. Just received 2000 new checks, so we'd prefer to not make a change in forms right now.

Any way around this one?

Cyndee, we have EXACTLY the same problem.  Something is different in the way XP handles the Okidata drivers (we're using the Okidata 321 for checks).  Have you figured anything out yet?

No solution yet, but I did get several suggestions for things to try from Daniel at Fortune Forms.  He's always been very helpful and talked to me for about an hour on this. He has talked to other customers but has never gotten feedback on what worked and what didn't. I promised to share whatever I find, but it may take awhile. Trial and error always does.

There is a documented issue with the Microsoft Generic Printer driver for NT (which passes on to 2000 and XP) that it feeds to 11 inch page regardless what you do.  I am not aware of a solution, although a couple of things have been suggested.  If anybody comes up with something that works, PLEASE let me know!

The DBA Check Format #2 with the regular Okidata (or whatever the printer brand is) will work on the 7" checks but it is a graphical format so it is SLOW on dot matrix.

My workaround for this is to leave the printer on the XP Pro workstation and share it with a Win 98 workstation. Not too bad, IF you have a Win98 machine to work with. I just have to go into the other office to initiate any printing of checks. I stick a polite "Hands off" sign on it so that no one else posts the checks until I have verified that they printed OK.

I use this printer only for checks.

Here's what I did:
On the XP Pro --
1. Deleted existing Text/Generic printer. Rebooted.
2. Reset the printer itself to factory defaults (just in case)
3. Go to Printers & Faxes and run "Add Printer Wizard"
Add Text/Generic as a local printer and share it.
4. After the wizard is finished, go back into the printer properties. On the sharing tab, click on additional drivers. Check Win95, 98 and ME, so it will add them.

On the Win98 workstation --
1. Added printer as a network printer. Browsed to it, through Network Neighborhood.
2. Go in to properties and make sure it is set to use the Text/Generic driver.
3. On Paper tab, leave page length set to Letter. Set to Continuous - no page break.

I hope that Microsoft will address this eventually, before all our Win98 machines die.

Have always had to print through Win 98.

Win2K, XP will NOT work even if you change server property for different paper size.

But now my Win98 machine is going out!

Just found a generic text driver that will work for XP
but it's $190.00 per seat.
Smiley it does have a 30day trial though.
I'm going to try sometime next week will let you know
if it works.

$190.00/seat - how many laser checks can you buy for that?
