btrieve 3105 error
02/18/04 at 12:24:21

Anyone seen or solved 3105 error - protocol transport error - on DBA startup?  Client is two new PCs (ASUS MB with on board Realtek RTL8139/810x  (8101L) ethernet) running Windows 2000.  Server is W2K running latest DBA version over TCP/IP.   First problem I have ever had installing DBA on W2K or even W98.

Pervasive installs and passes all tests.  I can run pervasive monitor and connect to database, and see users connected, open files, etc.   Start DBA and it hangs at DBA logo screen 15-30 seconds, the 3105 error  is displayed.

I've tried reinstalling and all other network connections and functions work fine, mapped server drives, internet, email,  etc.  Any suggestions?

Try the communications stress test in the Pervasive Smart Scout utility and check protocols individually.  Run c:\pvsw\bin\sscout32.exe and click the tab for System Tests.

Thanks, I ran sscout32.  I ran the stress test for over 5000 request, and all passed.  I did see a TCP/IP setsocketopt (SO_LINGER) error = 10014.   I do not see this error when running same test on working W2K PC.

I tend to think it's related to the ethernet driver, but all other network functions work fine.  I'm looking again for an updated driver.

I disabled the on board ethernet and installed a Linksys ethernet card.  Now when you start DBA the PC reboots everytime, so I'm not sure what the problem could be.  It does appear to be a pervasive btrieve issue.  I looked at pervasive web knowledge base, but nothing really helpful there.  Ideas anyone?

Since you are getting a protocol error, you may have to re-install W2K pro on those workstations. Somehow, the TCP/IP protocol stack might have gotten screwed up.

I was never able to solve this problem, but have more info now.  These two W2K PCs are on SP4.  We have several W2k PCs on SP3 working.  I updated one to SP4 and latest security patches via Microsoft update.  Now this PC no longer works with DBA and has same error.  The Pervasive communicatoins are working and MS Access ODBC to DBA database still works.  It appears to be a problem with DBA and btrieve interface with SP4 installed, or it's one of the security updates.  I'm still looking for a solution if anyone can help.

Well, to begin with there is really no need to go to SP4 on W2K machines. SP4 was to deal with some slight variations in how PVSW communicates on Win XP.

So, I would roll-back those machines to SP3 and see if that solves your problem.

This is the Microsoft SP4 for W2K.  The pvsw.log error is TP5wdba.exe Error 8505 An initialization error occurred when trying to establish a session with the WSE.

Ohhh....THAT SP4....Well,I would say if there is not a compelling reason to go to MS SP4 on the server (and it would have to be REALLY compellying when it takes down the main operatinf business software), then roll back MS SP4 and life should be happier again.

Did not know that, nor found it listed in the bugfixes on their website (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=327194 ).

We are running W2K Server SP4 with multiple W2K SP4 clients, but to be honest, without most of the security updates installed, as I have enough to do without being constantly on my toes because of Microsoft's security issues.  Unless it is a critical update, I will wait until they release SP5, if there ever is such an animal.  Operating behind a firewall with antivirus software has proven itself effective enough.

Anyway, IMHO, I would suspect one of your security updates is causing the problem, and at the same time concur with Lorne... install only what you really need.

Thanks Dan,

I could not agree more strenuously about MS's security crap....ooops meant patches. Installed one a couple of years ago on my server (apparently I was among the first 500 to do so) and totally blue-screened my server. 6 1/2 HOURS on the phone with various MS tech support people got it running again, but it was never stable. Eventually had to rebuild from scratch. SOOOOO much fun with a server. Especially since that was also my SQL server....{shudder}.

Oh and the SP4 I was referring to was Pervasive SP4 not Microsoft. I misunderstood which SP4 he was originally referring to.

Just my pennies worth though! Wink
