SO-D Print Shipping Labels
05/04/04 at 15:44:24

Most of our customers require a shipping label for each item in a shipment.  It must include Customer Name (or Ship To name for a drop shipment), their PO number, the item number, part number, description and quantity. Unfortunately DBA does not offer all of this info on one RTM report.  We can get header info or detail info but not both.

Does anyone else have customers that require this info?  If so how do you do it?  Lynn, would it be possible to get this information on one RTM.  We are currently doing this by hand and it takes quite some time.

I would suggest using MS Access through ODBC and get exactly ALL the information you want and then you can also use the preconfigured label sizes already included in Access to create the labels and you also then have the opportunity to include things such as your company logo or even information from other data sources also linked in to the same report. You can also get a LOT of flexibility it terms of selection capabilities as to how you want to choose who/what to print the labels for.

Just my $0.02 worth....

Does Access allow the option of adding Bar Codes to the label as well?  We are needing to implement bar coded labels for our customers and I'm trying to figure out the best way to implement without re-keying anything.

Thanks,
Shannon

Existing SO-D would just need another RTM - let me see what I can do.  What do you need to have bar coded?  Part Number?  What else?

This label has to conform to a John Deere World Wide standard - which dictates everthing from what needs to be on the label to which symbol code and what pitch to use.

They are asking for Part Number, Qty, Description, Trigger# (comes off EDI), Serial Number (Use Pack List#), Location (comes off EDI), Supplier, Dept, PO#, Ship Codes and Ship Address.

We use a seperate program for EDI, so I was hoping to use Access to pull information from there and then also have the capability for labels out of DBA for other customers down the road.

Think we can make it work with an RTM?

Sknapp,

Access would be the only logical choice here as you are needing to combine data from multiple sources.

Connect to the 2 sources (DBA and your EDI app) through ODBC and bring the information in via a couple of make-table queries in Access and then query off those tables to get your labels. And yes access can add bar codes for almost anything.

Next question.  Access 2000 is Win 2000/XP compatible.  The workstation that handles all the shipping paperwork is a Win98 machine.  Is it possible to compile a label program/report to be used on that workstation?

Thanks for your help,
Shannon

Yes, Access 2K apps will run on Win 9x machines. You will almost certainly need to upgrade the version of MS Jet database on those machines.
