Unable to create ODBC System DSN for Pervasive
09/03/04 at 08:33:03

I am trying to create an ODBC System DSN using Pervasive ODBC Engine and I'm getting the following error: 'An error occurred while retrieving local database names. Insufficient rights to get or set information.'        I am trying to do this remotely and the user I'm logged in as does have admin rights. So I'm confused. Can anyone shed any light on this error? Thanks.

If you are creating the system DSN that you need on the server to ultimately then create the matching ones on the clients, you need to create this ON the server logged in as admin, not remotely. If for some reason you cannot physically access the server you would need to terminal service into it.

You do this differently depending on what Pervasive Engine you are refering too.

If your server is running the actual Pervasive Server 2000i or later Engine as a system Service on an NT Box, then you need to do as Lorne said.  Defining a System DSN (in ODBC Administrator) using The "Pervasive ODBC Engine Interface" driver.  Don't forget to run the "ODBCDDF.RUN" program in DBA using UT-A so that ODBC compatible DDF files are created in the same directory as your DBA tables.  These are the DDF files that you point the System DSN too.

This defines a server resource that you can then access using a System DSN at each Client Workstation using the "Pervasive ODBC Client Interface".

If your server is running the Pervasive Workgroup Engine, then you need to install the workgroup engine at each workstation.  You can tell that you are using the workgroup engine by looking for an icon in the system tray that looks like a computer with a little green circle with a '+' in it.

Next, define a System DSN at the workstation using the "Pervasive ODBC Engine Interface" that gets installed with the Workgroup Engine.

If you are not up to at least Pervasive 2000i SP4 or later, then don't bother until you update your Pervasive installation.  You can find the Pervasive Service Packs and Hotfixes on their Web site at:

Thanks for your comments.

So I tried logging on as administrator remotely and creating the system DSN but I got the same error message. So do I need to actually on the server?
Loren what do you mean by: 'you would need to terminal service into it.'?  Do you mean like using Remote Desktop Connection?

I am running Pervasive.SQLV8 as a system service, so is the the right version to be following Lorne's steps?

You should be able to remote desktop to the server in order to do this.

And yes, if you are running off a client/server setup, then follow the instructions that I set up. If the RD connection still kicks back errors, then you would need to ensure the Server has Terminal Services set up on it and then connection through a TS client on your box. Bear in mind though that initiating the TS Service on the server has some distinct security concerns that you want to be aware of if this is your primary (domain), or only, server.

I checked on the server and the terminal service is running. I guess I will have to work actually on the server itself and hopefully it works. If I get the same error do you have any ideas on how I can rectify the problem? Thanks.
