Update from really old version
09/17/04 at 07:21:03

I have a client running version 2000.2 sp1. I can't remember whether I can bring this system current in one shot, or if I have to install some of the interim updates first. Does anyone have a fast answer to this?

Thanks,
Earle

Earle,

Can't say for sure, but in general whenever there are fairly significant DB changes (which there definitely are from that old a version to 2004), then it is always a best practice to go incrementally through the builds.

Not at all.  2002.4 or 2004.1 updates can be done in one shot to anything from 98.1 on with no problem.

I disagree. Although that may be because of my exposure to larger environments where database control and management is an important consideration.

Why go through the rebuild more than once?  So long as you have a good backup before you start, the update process compares your current Data Dictionary to the new one you are updating to (whatever version that may be) and rebuilds any files that are different and creates any new ones.  Makes no difference if your update is across one or several DBA versions, it only detects differences.

It may take longer if more files are involved but in many cases the same files are rebuilt by subsequent updates so why go through it multiple times?

Like I said, probably just that I am getting more ingrained into the types of environments where there are UAT groups and database admins and upgrades are performed via scripts and such. My prejudice. Gotta think back to my more cavalier days!!  Grin

Thanks for the input - I didn't think this would be so controversial. I'll try it Lynn's way, but because of Lorne's reservations I'll keep both fingers and toes crossed.
