Moving Existing DBA Classic to a new server
05/17/07 at 12:12:12

Hi,
We have DBA Classic 2002.4 installed on a computer that runs NT Server 4.  We have a small peer-to-peer network with 4 workstations all of which have access to the main DBA database on our server.

I want to update and get a new server that runs windows 2003.  Is the version of DBA Classic that I have compatible with windows 2003 server?  And how do I go about transferring data?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Colin is correct, the Pervasive version is what is significant, not DBA.  DBA itself will run fine but Pervasive 2000 is not supported in WIN 2003 server.  Upgrading to PSQL 9.5 is recommended.  For 5 or fewer users, you can use the PSQL Workgroup product which is only $25/user.

There is a difference between "not supported" and "can't do it"

Of course, it means that you SHOULDN'T do it. It's sort of like how you *shouldn't* spit into the wind. Can you? Sure! But it's not a winning idea.

LOL, Thanks for that analogy.

Okay, so if I understand this correctly, we should upgrade to PSQL 9.5 to avoid any spittle in the eye?!!?

IS Tech is a Pervasive reseller & can get upgrade pricing so you do not have to pay the full price.

Hi again,
We have Pervassive Version 2000i, so I see I need to buy the upgraded version and I will do that as soon as I order our server.  Thank you.  One more question, I thought I read somewhere that I'd have some problems w/ having a Win 2003 server & DBA & having our peer to peer network hooked up through a hub which is how we have it set up now.  Is that true?  Something about setting our network up this way slows things down.  It probably isn't true but I just want to be safe and ask.
Also, this is a very insightful forum.  Thanks for offering it.

Moving DBA to a new server is now a HOWTO on the Wiki.

I am not aware of any problems with the network architecture you described.

Can anyone tell me the exact procedure to move DBA to a new server.  I'm trying to move from Win 2000 Server to Windows 2003 SBS.  I tried the procedure posted on the WIKI but it did not work.  I tried both PSQL 2000i and PSQL ver. 9 with no luck.  I keep getting the following error when trying the Maintain Database:

Btrieve status 35 - The application encountered a directory error.
Key = Id: \programs\dbamfgDEFAULT\ file name (file name = Whatever file I'm trying to access)
DB1ERR_INVALIDDIR

Any help will be appriciated.

If the only error is using Maintain Database, then UT-A, program MDBFXREG should fix it.
