When we have a change to a drawing for a part in inventory and have the potential to end up with two different but useable parts under the same item number; and need to know which version was used where, we do the following. Temporarily put the part under lot control, with the lot numbers being the revision levels of the part. There is a note placed on the item to issue the old revision first and that when the old revision is complete to remove lot control from the item. The revision listed in IN-B for the item is the new revision, and the link goes to the new revision so that any ordering that takes place is done at the latest revision. As parts are issued to work orders, a lot number is required so traceabilty is achieved. Don't know if this could work for you, but we use it quite a bit as our parts are frequently changing and we do not want to add items and change BOMs.
