Workstation Discrepancies
10/10/03 at 04:42:58

Not sure what this problem is, but I have workstations reacting differently within the DBA program.

For instance, on one workstation, I cannot insert a line into a PO.  It never gives us the blank line, but all other workstations are okay.

On another workstation, I cannot print a previously posted packing slip, I get a blank page.  However, I can print it okay on another workstation.

All workstations are running windows 98.  All were setup with DBA at the same time.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried doing some simple Windows maintenance on your workstations?

Like the other equipment in your shop, computers ARE still machines and do need some occasional maintenace.

Haven't done anything in the recent past.

Are we speaking about defrag, scan disk, etc?  Or is there something else you are talking about?

Right.  Usually if there are discrepancies between the functional behavior of a network software from one station to the other it is due to a station problem.  Makes sense right?  So, step one is to make sure that the station is in tip top form, then see if the problems correct themselves.  if not, you can then start to search for other causes.

Ran defrag, scandisk, and some norton utilities on both workstations.

The problems persist:  On one, I cannot print a packing list for a posted invoice.  On the other, I cannot insert lines in the middle of a Puchase order.

What do I need to do to correct problem?

Well, the next step would be to completely clean DBA AND Pervasive client off the affected workstations.  There is a Pervasive "Clean" utility on your DBA install CD in a folder called cleanup, I believe.  It can also be downloaded from the Pervasive site.

1st go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.  Uninstall Pervasive from this answering No to the registry clean-up question and the other prompts.

Then exit and re-start.  On anything except Win 2K and XP, I think it will require a re-start.

After re-starting run the cleanup.exe file that you would have installed from the CD or download.  Re-start.

Re-install Pervasive from the PVSW>Clients>Win directory on your server.  Run the tests.

Re-do the DBA client install from DBAMFG>Workstation Setup folder.

Try your functionality again.  If it STILL does odd behaviour on ONLY a couple of workstations, then you pretty much have to wipe those workstations and re-install Windows and everything else (I cannot stress too much here the value of having a properly trained network support person do this.  It will take wayyyyy less time away from your productivity and they know how to save your settings and your favorites and all that).

Karen,
One thing you might check is the config.sys and autoexec.bat legacy files in the root directories of these machines.

It may be that there are some DOS drivers or utilities being loaded that are consuming real mode memory.  For example, if an older win 3.3 machine was upgraded to win 98, the realmode cdrom Drivers may still be loading.  With Win 98, most of the old realmode drivers and tsr's are not needed.  If they load, they just consume memory.

I have run into problems before with a shortage of usable RAM with DBA.  I know, you have multiple megabytes of RAM.  However, in a non NT type environment, all RAM is not created equal!

Did your problem just now start or has it been ongoing?

Also can you print anything else in DBA?  What happens after you try to print?  Any messages or just a blank screen?

What happens exactly when you stated that you can't insert lines in the middle of the PO?
