I think the program has become exponentially more complicated as each new version has come out. So, I think the average, unsophisticated user like me is better off with a relatively intuitive version like 7. Version 7 is a full featured report writer that evolved from earlier versions so it has lots of improvements. Versions 8 and above lack the compile and distribute engine out of the box so you have to download it and install it, which isn't really a big deal. I guess if someone is buying for the first time and not trying to justify an expensive upgrade, a supported version is a better bet.
